Your photos, mail, and notes, kept at home.
myData is an open-source personal cloud that runs on a computer you own. One assistant can search everything in it, and none of it is sent to anyone else's servers.
One box at home holds everything.
Your phone and laptop are windows onto it. They ask the box, and the box answers. The parts below are the plan, and none of them are built yet.
A home server
A small always-on computer, such as a Mac mini or a Linux box, stores your data and runs the AI model. Each app keeps its own database file there.
Your devices
A web app first, then phone and desktop apps. They reach the server over your home Wi-Fi, or through a private encrypted tunnel when you are away.
One assistant
myAssistant can use every app as a tool: search mail, find a photo, add a reminder. It reads freely, and it asks before it sends or deletes anything.
A family of apps over one store of data.
The first five come first because they hold what people ask an assistant about most. The rest follow one at a time.
- myContactsYour address book, pulled from the account you already use.First
- myCalendarEvents and schedules the assistant can read and search.First
- myMailA searchable copy of your mail, by keyword and by meaning.First
- myPhotosYour library, searchable by place, date, and what is in the picture.First
- myAssistantChat and voice across all of the above, running on a local model.First
- myNotes, myRemindersSimple records that sync between your devices.Later
- myFiles, myDocsDocuments and scans, stored as ordinary files.Later
- myHealthHealth data synced from your phone to your own server.Later
- myHomeLights, plugs, and sensors, through Home Assistant.Later
A bird that never leaves the ground.
Most of our digital lives are kept in the cloud, on computers that belong to someone else. The kiwi cannot fly. It lives in a burrow it digs for itself, keeps to itself, and guards its own patch of ground.
That is what myData is meant to be: a home for your data that stays on the ground, on hardware you own.
- Cannot flyYour data stays out of the cloud
- Digs its own burrowRuns on your own home server
- Shy and nocturnalPrivate by default
- Finds food by smellSearch finds anything you have stored
- Guards its territoryOnly your devices are let in
The limits, stated up front
- Mail and calendar accounts still live with your provider. myData keeps a searchable copy at home, and the original stays where it is.
- An iPhone does not let outside apps send iMessages, place calls hands-free, or listen for a custom wake word.
- A model small enough to run at home makes more mistakes than a large cloud model. That is why sending and deleting always need your confirmation.
- You run the server, so backups are your job. Encrypted offsite backup is part of the plan.
Where the project stands
myData is at the idea stage. There is a plan and a logo, and no code yet. The steps run in this order, and each one has to work before the next begins.
- Test the ideaCheck whether a local model picks the right tool often enough to trust.Next
- Server, contacts, and calendarThe first two services, behind an API with an access token.Planned
- myAssistant, read-onlyChat over real data, with a log of every request.Planned
- myMailSync, clean, and index mail for search.Planned
- myPhotosImport, thumbnails, and search by place, date, and content.Planned
- Always-on server, phone apps, home, and voiceEverything that needs dedicated hardware.Later
